People to People International, a nonprofit, international cultural and educational exchange organization with chapters in 36 countries, will be "Weaving the Dream" during our 14th Worldwide Conference, scheduled for November 8 - 11, 2000, in Kowloon, Hong Kong. The conference is open to anyone who has an interest in furthering understanding and tolerance between people of all nations.
We were thrilled to announce last year that Penny McManigal would be our latest Artistic Ambassador, and that she would be bringing her "Weaving the Dream" project to Hong Kong. This interactive project is a visual metaphor to acknowledge and honor that the world is indeed interconnected, interlinked and an interdependent community of seamless fabric. Each attendee is asked to bring his/her own selected Ðgifts¼ of cloth and ribbon, to be co-creatively Ðwoven¼ into the collective weave we will be creating at the conference. These colorful Ðgifts¼ should consist of any piece of 3” x 4¼ cloth and 3” x 1¼ ribbon. The cloth could be from a scarf, a man”s tie, a piece of torn T-shirt, a marvelous hand-woven offering, a remnant from an ancestor”s or loved one”s belonging, or any wondrous or simple creation. The ribbon should not be wider than one inch. The completed weave will hang in the International Headquarters office as a permanent reminder of the interconnectedness of the world.
PTPI is expecting approximately 300 delegates representing its worldwide membership to attend the worldwide conference. The theme of this important event is "The Promise of Asia." Highlights will include the presentation of the organization's most prestigious award, the Eisenhower Medallion, to Archbishop Desmond Tutu. In addition, one of the confirmed keynote speakers is Mr. Kunio Saito, Director, Internaitonal Monetary Fund, Asia and the Pacific.
