Peace Through Art

An International Celebration of Watercolour
from Around the World
Revised Friday, October 4, 2002

Unique Show Venue

Art is the common language that brings all nations together. Our hope is that ŠPeace through Art¼ will cross boundaries and mend breaches where other mechanisms have failed.

This will be the first time in Turkey that an international watercolour art show has taken place. It will be located in the ancient and beautiful Aegean port of Izmir. Participating artists, and art-lovers, will come from around the world. The Izmir Watercolourist Association will provide substantial advertising in Turkey about the show.

Turkey is one of the oldest centers for culture, boasting Roman, Greek, Mesopotamian, Urartian, Lydian, Phrygian, Acathian, Hittite, and other civilizations of antiquity.

Eighty years ago, a man of vision changed Turkey into the vibrant western and modern society that it is today. President M. Kemal Ataturk said in his political speeches that he saw a life with ŠPeace in the Home and Peace for the World¼. Working from this statement he separated the religions of Turkey from politics. Turkish people now take great pride in their country and in the diversity of their cultures.

Participating artists in ŠPeace through Art¼ will show four pieces of their work. Submissions should emphasize the flavor of the participant”s country. There will be opportunities for demonstrating and sampling artistic techniques of the various countries of the participants. There will be tours to the many ancient temples and amphitheatres, and experience of the local culture during this week.

2. The subject of the paintings, on the gallery wall, must reflect the cultural aspects of the participant”s country of origin, while the portfolio section can show any of the artist”s private collection.

3. Any unframed submissions, to be displayed on Gallery wall, should be mailed flat to arrive at the Dogan Art Gallery by March 1, 2004. These submissions will be matted and framed at cost to the participant, at wholesale prices.

If the submission is framed, and will travel with the artist, then it must be at the gallery before the opening of show. Paintings must be titled. A biography of the artist to be displayed on gallery wall must be printed.

4. At the end of the show submissions will be returned to the artist. If the submission is sold at the show, the Izmir Watercolourist Association, or the Dogan Art Gallery will not require a commission.

5. At the show, each artist will have a small table with their portfolio available, and their national flag near their paintings. Demonstrations or workshops may be offered if desired by participants.

Market to Artists: Compelling Reasons

Sales will be possible through the International Watercolour Art show
The Izmir Watercolourlist's Association hosts this International Watercolour Art show, not to make a profit, but to have an exchange of ideas, to meet new artists and to allow others to enjoy the taste of the Turkish culture and history.

Through these artistic exchanges, it is hoped that in a small way, artists from the various countries can help to bridge gaps and to make the World a more peaceful place in which to live. Friendships will be forged during this event and we hope that another ŠPeace through Art¼ International Watercolour Art show will take place in the home country of other participating artists.
